The Basics of Flat Roofing
A flat roof is not literally flat. It could be slightly convex in order to allow water to drain along the edges of the roof. It could also be slightly concave if the drainage system is located at the center of the roof.
Tar and gravel are normally used for flat roofing. These materials would be enough to prevent water penetration as long as there is no pooling on the roof surface. In colder climates however, tar and gravel may not be enough to protect the roof against ice dams.
In order to prevent damage, builders are now using continues membrane to cover a flat roof. This type of covering can resist pooling or standing water. By using adhesives and sealants, it is possible to install multiple sheets in order to fully waterproof the roof.
Modern Flat Roof Innovations
Aside from tar and gravel, other types of materials can also be used for flat roofs. These include asphalt, true rubber or synthetic rubber. Using such materials however have several disadvantages that’s why builders are developing new construction techniques.
One innovation is the application of sprayed polyurethane foam on a flat roof. SPF can expand as much as 50 times and will adhere to any surface. It can produce a solid and unbroken roof surface.
By coating the sprayed polyurethane foam with protective elastomeric, a flat roof can last for more than 50 years. This type of roofing material can also make your home more energy efficient.
