Major Types of Roof Insulation Systems
1. Blanket Insulation - This is made from rolls of flexible fibers. It is available in pre-set widths in large rolls.
2. Blown-In Insulation - This is made from loose fill fiber loose fiber pellets. The material is blown into the cavities of ceilings or attic.
3. Foamed Insulation - This is made from polyurethane foam that can be sprayed into place. Application can be done by a professional roofing insulation service. The polyurethane foam adheres uniformly on the surface and could reduce air leaks.
4. Rigid Roof Insulation - This is made from solid fibrous foam that is formed into sturdy boards. It could also be used as an effective acoustic insulation.
5. Reflective Insulator - This is made from aluminum foil backed by paper, polyurethane, or cardboard. It can effectively resist downward heat flow.
Installation Issues for Different Types of Roofing
Installation of roof insulation system differs from roof to roof. If you have a pitched roof with a large attic, insulating it would be easier. Any type of insulator would be best for this type of roofing system.
On the other hand, some installation issues may arise if you have a flat roof, domed roof, or roofing with very low pitch. Normally, home and building owners will hire a contractor to do the installation of insulation. For flat roof, sprayed polyurethane foam and blown-in insulation are usually applied.
In difficult cases when the ventilation of your roof will be affected by the roof insulation, some structural changes to your roofing system should be done first. Some contractors will recommend adding a pitched roof on top of the flat roof to allow proper installation of roof insulation.
